Electrical Switches

Electrical switches are most commonly found in the form of wireless, dimmer, and single pole.

Electrical switches are very important additions to any home or building.  An electrical switch is directly responsible for completing or breaking a circuit for a specific purpose.  Most electrical switches are devoted to home lighting, but can also be installed for a variety of different uses.  There are also a wide variety of different electrical switch designs, each with a different feel in terms of functionality and style.  Choosing the right ones for each room in your home is essential, so that you have electrical switches that you’ll be perfectly happy with, over time.

There are three main types of electrical switches that you’ll find commonly used in the average home.  They are: single pole switch, wireless electrical switch, and electrical dimmer switch.   Single pole switch tends to be the most common, and takes the form of your average lever light switch.  These are used to manually complete, or disconnect a circuit, to either turn on a light or appliance, or turn them off.  Handy, easy to use, and long lasting, the single pole switch is a standard, and the one that most home owners tend to choose.  They are also fairly easy to replace, and repair, also making them favorites.

The next most popular option is the dimmer switch.  This electrical switch is useful for controlling how much light is present in a room, by giving you the ability to dim the light to any level desirable to you.  Dimmer switches work by quickly turning a light bulb on and off, faster than your eye can detect, to give off the appearance of a light that’s not quite as bright as normal.  This is contrary to the popular belief that a dimmer switch restricts electricity to achieve the same result.  Dimmer switches typically work by using a lever that can slide from top to bottom, adjusting the amount of light depending upon how high you set the switch.  These are useful for accommodating different tastes and occasions, as well as saving on electricity.

A wireless electrical switch is a very cost effective way to move electrical switches to more convenient places, without the need for costly construction work.  A wireless switch works by replacing an existing switch with a receiver box.  Then, a control unit, usually in the form of a traditional single pole switch, is placed at any location you would prefer the electrical switch to be.  The only restriction with wireless electrical switches is that the switch has a signal range limit, so the control box can only be placed a certain distance from the receiver box.  Then the unit works by sending a signal when the switch is flipped, so that the receiver will complete or cut the circuit to turn a light on or off.

Any hardware store will have a wide variety of options for each switch, so that you can find the perfect electrical switches for your home.  Places like Home Depot provide not only a wide variety, but also informed expertise if you have any questions about replacing electrical switches.
